PENLAND

It's nearly spring and things are about to start cooking again here at Penland. This Saturday (March 3) is our annual community open house which runs from 1-5 PM. This is a great afternoon with activities in most of the studios--if you're in the area, be sure to stop by. Details are on our website.

In other news, we have a limited number of grant-funded scholarships available to full-time primary and secondary teachers who are taking our special summer workshop titled The Urgency of Teaching Art. You can find information on these scholarships by following the link from our home page.

Spring Concentration classes begin on Sunday, March 11. The session is nearly full, but  as of today there is an opening in Suzie Ganch's beginning metals class and one in Anna Tomczak's photography class, which will also include some instruction in bookbinding. Details are available in the spring course description page of our website. If you are interested in either of these classes, call Lisa Grindstaff at 828-765-2359.

The website address is www.penland.org. Be sure to look through the summer course descriptions for many images of instructor work (fun to look at even if you're not planning to take a class).

Yours,

Robin Dreyer
Communications Manager

Steinert Glass School

For those that may be interested, Steinert Glass School at Plum Creek, Kent
Ohio, is starting their first classes this month.  They have evening classes
on Beginning Glassblowing and Jewelry starting 2/26, daytime classes on
Flameworking, and weekend sessions on Beadmaking, Soldering and most
importantly - BLACKSMITHING.

Later, in addition to these courses, they will be offering intermediate and
advanced courses in Glassblowing and Flameworking and courses in Kiln/Sand
Casting (glass) and Fusing/Slumping (glass).

This is a new, not for profit, school that has been in the works for several
years.  The school is located in the old Kent water works plant that has
been remodeled specifically for this purpose.  John Steinert is the founder
of the school.  John is also the owner of Steinert Industries, a leader in
the manufacture of glass blowing equipment.

For more information, you may contact the school at
[email protected] or phone 330-677-0729.
