At the beginning of the Copper Canyon is the main tourist town Creel, with estimated 1359 inhabitants. From this point you are able to do various trips to everything you desire.

Arareco lake, Cusárare waterfalls, Hot Springs, Basaseachic waterfalls, Divisadero, Valley of the monks, Tarahumaras (natives in their natural caves)

Fishing, hiking, mountain-bike riding, horse back riding, bathing, swimming, etc.

Here the Germans are suffering from the long ride with the ChePe, sitting - no – enthroning in the Pancho Villa Suite, enjoying the people on the plaza walking by, gulping Warsteiner, watching the thunderstorm with laser and strobe light-show.

If you like a cheap and very comfortable youth hostel, I recommend Hotel Margarita, next to the town’s square, between the church and the community house. 1 minute south from the station. $80 pesos/night (incl. breakfast, dinner, cleaning the bathroom and making the bed), very friendly hosts (e.g. Roxana, 22, tall, gorgeous and with a friendly, sexy smile for everyone, It’s enough information, isn’t it?)

Hotel Margarita is everything but for young people, we met people of all ages from all over the world, Australia, Germany, France, Bayern, Slovakia. People of Mexico are also called tourists, there were very friendly tourists from e.g. Monterrey and Mexico City.

Most of the time after the exhausting trips we sat on the veranda and had serious talking.

We discussed issues like "How to maintain a cool beer while the changing of the political situation in Mexico."

This is the common dinning room, and I do not know who the girl to the left is! Because everybody wants to know.

One of these exciting trips (paseos) was to the Cusárare waterfalls, 30 m high, nice walk along a river for about 45 min, accompanied by tourist dogs, in a "wilderness", where every tenth meter a Tarahumara group is sitting on a rock, selling useless handcrafts with the only word for marketing: "COMPRA"

(Lit. = Buy now, you stupid idiot).

I do not have to explain you that Tom climbed up all the 30 m and finally arrived at the top of the right picture.

All (stupid, brainless) children in front of the monitor please do not try this at home!

Your parents will never get the permission to build such a waterfall in your backyard!

Short dictionary for long conversations with natives. Translation in Tarahumara with Spanish pronunciation.

  • Thank you = Natetereva
  • Hello = Guira va
  • How are you = Chu ye na la uva
  • Excuse me = Pe licencia
  • Pardon = Perdona
  • I did not quiet understand what you’ve said, could you please repeat your sentence = Piri hu
  • What’s your name = Chimi de hue
  • Dick = Bisaka (it’s just a formation of a stone)

Please take a close look at the shoes (not kidding): They are made of parts of tires, fitted with strips to the feet. I certainly do not believe that this is a very old tradition, but interesting.

I personally have the feeling the Tarahumaras invented the first silly walks, which were copied later by Monty Python’s Flying Circus to make a lot of money. Thus the right picture shows the 3000-year-old tradition of silly walks, so called: Kickyourbutt-walks (very effective and harmful).

OK, the guy plays woodball, the early form of football, but the ball is made of "guess what"?

If you want to enjoy silent moments or do a ride with the mountain-bike from Creel, check this out. You can just sit at, swim, fish in or drive by this gorgeous lake. Not even fishes will disturb you in the silent moments, because as I was sitting there for three hours with my fishing rod, bathing toast-bread; no damn fish interrupted me in thinking of the peace in the world.

Please take into account to make a stop in El Fuerte, unfortunately you have to take a Taxi from the station to the center, but both is worth it. The strange Taxi and the beautiful palmy central place with a terrific governmental building and mosque-like church.

All of a sudden at the central place, we thought we’re losing our eyesight by eating Burritos, because everything turned yellow and darkly foreboding. Luckily it was just the sun going down and tinting the clouds, as you see it looks like an upcoming sandstorm.
