I'd say out of all the characters in Super Smash Bros., Mario is probably the most average. He doesn't really have any unique moves that truly separate him from the pack and he doesn't exactly excel in one area or another. Mario can actually be a pretty difficult character to play as, but if you use him enough, you'll find out he can do some pretty nifty stuff if you know how to use him right. It can be argued whether Mario or Luigi is best, but it really just depends on what type of character you want to use. Mario is good for racking up other characters' damage meter, and Luigi is good for just plain knocking other characters out. So either way, you can't really go wrong, although it seems like most people prefer Luigi over Mario.

HOW TO USE MARIO'S SPECIAL MOVES
Fire Ball
Mario's fire ball can be used for a number of things. It doesn't do to much damage to other characters, so you shouldn't really use it for that. It's mainly good at slowing characters down. It's a good move to use if a character is running towards or jumping at you. Also if someone is trying to get back on the course, you can use Mario's fireball to keep them from getting up, making them fall to their death. But what I think Mario's fire ball is most effective at is using it to target bombs or other things that you can blow up or break from a distance. If you get really good, you can bounce it off things and target certain characters, objects, or items. Use your environment to your advantage. Bounce the fire ball off of walls or parts of the floor, and use it to blow up bombs or mines. If a mine or bomb is in your way, use the fire ball to take it out. If another character is running towards or about to pick up a bomb, you can use it to blow up the bomb before the character gets to it, or even take out another character by throwing a fireball at a bomb when they are standing near it or about to pick it up.
-Tips to remember-
1) Study how the fire ball moves and bounces off the ground. By knowing how the fireball moves (Remember that it falls and bounces, Luigi's doesn't), you'll be better at targeting items and other characters with it, and will also know how to predict it if someone uses it against you. 2) Use the fireball to slow or distract people. Especially good if they are running or jumping at you. 3) If another character is trying to get back on the course, or grab onto the edge, use the fireball to knock them back down or keep them from getting up. 4) Use the fireball to blow up mines or bombs that are in your way. 5) Use the fireball to blow up mines or bombs before other characters can get to them and use them against you. 6) If you notice a character running towards or standing by a bomb or activated mine, you can use the fireball to blow up the mine or bomb; doing substantial damage to them or even blowing them clear off the course.
Super Jump Punch
Mario's next move is the Super Jump Punch. This move is almost identical to Luigi's Super Jump Punch, except for the fact that Mario's is mainly used to rack up points on an opponents damage meter, while Luigi's is used to knock an opponent out of the arena. Mario's Super Jump Punch will hit the enemy multiple times if done right. Basically, you want to use the jump punch when at a diagnol angle, and if done right, the punch will knock several coins out of the character, doing substantion damage. Try to hit your opponent from below if possible, as that usually gives you the best results. Mario's Super Jump Punch is a good move to use if someone jumps at you, or if you are below another character. If done right, you can sometimes hit two or three characters with one punch. It is also the move to use when you are knocked far off the course, and are trying to get back on. Mario can jump very high if you combine a jump with the Super Jump Punch, and can even sometimes make it back on the course when it seems like he's to far off. At it's peak, the jump is very high, use it to grab onto a ledge if you fall. Also, when using Mario's Super Jump Punch, be careful when around ledges or pitfalls. Because once you use the Super Jump Punch, Mario won't be able to freely move again until he hits the ground. And remember that there is a slight delay between landing a Super Jump Punch and being able to move around freely again. If you use the move, and an opponent is near you, he'll most likely be able to hit you as you land before you are able to get out of the way.
-Tips to remember-
1) Mario's Super Jump Punch is basically used to rack up points on an opponents damage meter. Don't try to use it to knock another player out of the arena, as it's not meant for that, and will usually end up hurting you more than them since you can't move again until you toach the ground. 2) When using Mario's Super Jump Punch, make sure you are at an angle to the character you are trying to hit. That'll give you the best results and rack up the most points. 3) If you are below a character, or a character is above you, it's probably a good time to use Super Jump Punch. 4) Use the Super Jump Punch to get back onto the course if someone knocks you off. 5) Be careful when using the Super Jump Punch around ledges or pitfalls. Since Mario can't move freely until he toaches the ground, if you use the punch near a pitfall, you'll just fall to your death. 6) Remember that when you land from a Super Jump Punch, there is a slight delay before you can move again. If a character is running towards you, that slight delay can cause you to get knocked out before you can dodge the attack.
Mario Tornado
The last of Mario's special moves is the Mario Tornado. This is a very good move to use when you want rack up points on someone's damage meter, as it will hit the opponent tons of times and throw the player up at the end. When you do the move, Mario will start spinning around, try to do it when around a couple more characters, as you can usually catch two or three at a time, hitting every singe one of them dozens of times. A good tactic to use, is to stand by while two or three other characters are duking it out. Then, when they are pretty close to each other, jump at them and use the Mario Tornado. Mario's jump will carry him for a while and you'll probably be able to catch everyone in the tornado if done right, damaging all of them. A cheap thing to do is to catch someone in the tornado and wait for Mario to hit them up in the air at the end. Then, while they are falling back down, do the move again. This is very annoying and most players have a hard time getting away, as they just keep getting caught in the tornado while falling. It is however a cheap trick, and you can bet that if you do it alot, you'll find that you'll be the one character everyone is after!
-Tips to remember-
1) Use the Mario Tornado when you want to rack up a lot of points on someone's damage meter. 2) Use the move when around two or more people to hit all of them. 3) If above someone, it might be a good idea to use the tornado, is it will usually hit them. 4) It's a good move to use when everybody else is busy fighting each other. If you use the move when above them, you'll most likely catch all them in the tordado of guard. 5) Don't use the tornado too often, as it's a cheap move and can be very annoying. It'll make the other players all want to gang up and come after you! |
