The most important feature of the Y type planetary gearing is that each planet gear can mesh simultaneously with three concentric gears of different numbers of teeth. If we reduce one concentric gear, e.g., the sun gear, then each planet gear may mesh with only the two ring gears. This forms either a U type planetary gearing or a KHV planetary gearing with ZERO gearing. In other words, they are modified from and covered by the US Patent of the Y Type Planetary Gearing.
Essentially the U type consists of only two pairs of internal gearing and needs no carrier. Thus, its structure is very simple. In an internal pair, the two conjugating surfaces are concave versus convex, which decreases the contact stress. Moreover, optimum parameters enable the U type to provide the multi-pair teeth contact to share the load. Therefore, the U gearing can transmit a large torque with a small size. The U type costs less and is an ideal candidate for a transmission that requires large torque, high ratio, and limited space.
