The Y type planetary gearing is a very promising
new design that offers many advantages: simple structure, large ratio,
small size, high reliability, and low cost. The Y consists
of only 3 concentric gears (2 ring gears and 1 sun gear), and a
plurality of planet gears. Each planet gear can mesh simultaneously with
3 concentric gears of different numbers of teeth (e.g.125, 120,
and 40), resulting in a compact structure with a high ratio (in
this case 100 or -99). Although the planet can mesh 3
gears of different teeth, it is not a stepped gear. It has a uniform
tooth profile along its width. Therefore, there is no problem of
phasing during teeth cutting and assembly, resulting in a low
cost. Since many planets share the load and the output member is
the large diameter ring gear, the force acting on each tooth is decreased
and the overall size can be reduced. For example, a 9-planet Y power
joint rated 30,000 in-pound torque, is only 3 inch
in diameter. Because the forces acting on each planet are balanced and
the output is a ring gear, the the most expensive part-carrier
(including many bearings & shafts for supporting the carrier itself
and each planet) can be eliminated. The sun gear is supported
by the planets. The only bearing needed is for the output ring gear. Because
its rotation is low and its diameter is large, the less expensive needles
or roller bearings can be used, even no bearings at all. Therefore, the
Y with fewer parts is very compact,
simple, reliable and low cost, particularly good for built-in configurations.
For example, the Y can be built inside a lifting drum of
a winch or a traveling wheel to reduce the size and weight to the maximum
extent. A smart speed ratio distribution between the 2KH(+) type and the
2KH(-) type and using optimized geometrical parameters can make an important
contribution to increasing the efficiency of the Y. All the
gears of the Y have special tooth-profiles to provide
a much stronger tooth strength than that of a standard gearing.
All the special tooth-profiles can be cut by standard cutters with no additional
equipment.
