AUDIOLAB 8000Q Pre-Amplifier

 

    

 

 

 

The Audiolab 8000Q Preamplifier has a magnificently natural and open sound with superb resolution of detail and dynamics.  The sound is so pure, nothing added and nothing taken away, that the introduction of the 8000Q represents the most significant advance in Hi-Fi amplifiers since the original Audiolab 8000A Integrated Amplifier took the Hi-fi market by storm nearly 10 years ago.

While the 8000Q is a more purist design than the well known Audiolab 8000C Preamplifier it is by no means a minimalist design.  There are 6 line inputs and 3 tape outputs.  Gain is adjustable in 3dB steps from 0-15dB, to match a wide range of Hi-fi systems with different power amplifier and speaker sensitivities.  A direct coupled headphone output, and two sets of audio outputs make it a very versatile preamplifier.

Input, volume and muting can be set by remote control.  All signals are switched with high quality small signal relays and the volume control is a motorized potentiometer.  Both were chosen in preference to any electronic devices which would have introduced unacceptable coloration.  The mechanical design and printed circuit layout are optimized to keep all signal path as short as possible.

Gain and Input Sensitivity:

Adjustable in 3dB steps between 0 and 15dB to give nominal input sensitivity of 100mV, 140mV, 200mV, 283mV, 400mV or 562mV.   With headphones connected the gain is adjustable between 18dB and 33dB in 3dB steps.

Signal to Noise: (IHFA, rel 0.5v Output) 97db for any input, any gain setting, 80dB for headphone
Frequency Response: 10Hz to 20kHz   +-0.1Hz to 75kHz  -3dB.
Total Harmonic Distortion and Intermodulation (IHF IM) Distortion: Any ouput level up to 7.7V RMS, any frequency 20Hz to 20kHz, any input level up to +23dB over rated sensitivity and any gain setting.  Less than 0.007%.
Channel Balance: Within 1dB
Channel Separation: Better than 100dB @ 1kHz any input, any gain setting.
Crosstalk: Better than 100dB @ 1kHz
Phase (Polarity): Non-inverting for all inputs and outputs.
Pre-Amp Output: OUTPUT 1 and OUTPUT 2.  Output impedance 75Ohms.  Maximum output > 7.7V RMS (20dBm)
Headphone Output: Maximum output > 7.7V RMS.  Output impedance 100 Ohms.  Suitable for headphones 8 Ohms to 2K Ohms impedance.  Headphone output operates automatically when headphones are plugged in.  While headphones are plugged in, the pre-amp outputs are muted.
Record Output: VIDEO OUT, TAPE 1 out and TAPE 2 Out.  Output impedance 1L Ohms.  Gain from input to record output 0dB (x1).
Output Mute: Switches pre-amp outputs off.  Attenuation > 63dB.  Muting is controlled automatically.
