"Being a winner in the knowledge
economy : The case of Canada"

The knowledge economy is among us. Fuelled
by the computer revolution, the knowledge economy has made knowledge the
most important asset in developing a comparative or competitive advantage.
Intellectual capital is one approach to study the knowledge economy and
dissect knowledge. It is made of three components, namely human, structural
and customer capital. Considering that knowledge is a valuable resource
that can be transmitted, six economic paradigms have been used to analyse
the knowledge economy and establish some points of reference at the country,
regional and firm levels. These economic paradigms help us understand some
of the issues Canada and Canadian firms face in the "regime change". Also,
they enable us to undertake some questioning of the country’s industrial
priorities and international trade orientations. If opportunities exist,
and Canada can take its place as it deserves in the international trade
tournament, the "organised disorganisation" that prevails now prohibits
us from taking anything for granted.
