Marketing part 1

search engines

What about search engines how do I get on them and what are they all about?
Search engines are how peaple find things on the web. When you see a little white box labeled search the web, thats a search box. it is connected with a search engine. These boxes have a lot to do with folks finding your site. If your not on the list that the search engine goes through when somebody does a search they wont see your homepage listed. This means that although youve got bells whistles and apple pie on your page no one will know its there! So it's important to take the time and find out how to get on them.
One other note YAHOO is not a search engine. It is a directory

Whats the difference? Well for now all you need to know is that if you apply on a service to be put on X number of search engines with a service of some kind you will not be applying to YAHOO. You must apply to them seperately. Yes you should apply to them as they are the most used service on the web and if your listed there your chances of a sale will increase dramaticly.

Here is a good place to start looking for a submition service.SUBMIT PLACE
Notice YAHOO is listed seperately.
Oh all right if you insist here is where to go on yahoo to get started with suggesting a site. They call it suggesting instead of submitting because as i mentioned they are humans not machines.

What is the url they ask for when I go to submit my site to the search engines?

The url is simply the name given to your page by the provider of the homepage. It usualy starts with http:// If your using Ie4 or Ie5 (internet explorer) you can see the url of this page by looking at the long white box up at the top of your browser that has Address on one side and GO on the other. Your url will be their when you are looking at your page(not when editing). Your homepage is actualy a FILE on another computer and should be named index.html. So actually the stuff you see before the index.html is just the directory that the file is in. the http:// is telling the internet the style of file to look for. Another type of file that has a similar look to the code is a file for a picture on your page. On the most simple providers the whole name is exatctly the same as the homepage name (url remember?) with the exception of the file name itselft Instead of index.html a picture will be called gif or jpeg or jpg. So if you had a picture you saved as PHOTO1 at the end of the url address you would see this..photo1.gif
