Mr. Robert H. Benmosche Chief Executive Officer MetLife 200 Park Avenue New York, New York 10017 Dear Mr. Benmoshe: Last September, your subsidiaries, SSR Realty Advisors ("SSR") and Metric Property Management ("MPM"), purchased the Northgate Heights apartment complex in Waltham, Massachusetts and proceeded to hike rents by 30% to 50%. To make matters worse, tenants unable to pay these unconscionable increases were given as little as 60 days notice to vacate. These actions have forced many people, including numerous retirees and people on fixed incomes, to leave their homes...homes they had been living in for many years. This is extremely ironic - SSR's Apartment Value Fund purchased Northgate Heights for the purpose of enhancing the financial well being of retired people. To add insult to injury, the MPM staff on the property has harassed tenants, threatening them with eviction and damage to their credit rating. For the last six months, the Northgate Heights Tenants Association had been asking for a meeting with SSR to discuss ways in which to reach an amicable agreement to this situation.SSR ignored all requests, saying that they'd rather meet with people individually. It took a public rally and a Resolution from the Waltham City Council to bring SSR to the negotiating table. They met on May 18th, at which time the Tenants Association proposal (their third offered to SSR) for a schedule of graduated increases was flatly rejected. A second meeting took place on May 21st and, during that meeting, the Tenants Association was told that their latest proposal was rejected. The SSR lawyer said that these meetings were not negotiations and that his client considers the tenants at Northgate Heights nothing more than "an income stream." I am appalled that a corporation like MetLife would allow this to happen to good, honest, hard-working people and call on you, Mr. Benmoshe, as Chief Executive Officer of MetLife, to put an end to this terrible treatment of the citizens of Northgate Heights. One telephone call from you will force SSR/MPM to reach an amicable agreement with the tenants at Northgate.MetLife, SSR and MPM cannot be allowed to treat human beings so callously and destroy our community. I am sure MetLife would like to be known for their compassion in dealing with its customers. I don't think you wish to be portrayed as the company that has destroyed the Northgate Heights community just to serve the bottom line. Sincerely,
