Mata Hari was released in 1978 (the IPD list it as 1977). It was designed by Jim Patla and the art work was done by Dave Christensen. Less than two hundred were released as EM machines, over sixteen thousand solid state machines were built.

This one has the original solid state backglass with some german writing on the dagger. As I understand the story, some people found the foreign text to be unsettling so later production dropped the writing from the knife.

Game Play - by Steve Chappel

The center of the playfield is void of any scoring targets, just nice artwork. This large open area allows you to set up long drop target shots, shots to the side lanes, or even all the way to the top. Score A and B in any combination, top or side lanes, and their subsequent value is increased. The first and second time you do it, one 1000 pt. pop bumper will light. Do it 5 times and you will awarded an Extra Ball.

Hitting drop targets increases bonus and landing in the top saucer only magnifies that bonus up to 5X. All targets are reset and bonus goes to 1000 when the ball drains. Ball drains in this game are somewhat easy, with a large outhole between the flippers and large access points to the side drains. If you land in the saucer a few times those outlanes are worth 50K.
