Title: Sylvan International Universities Outlines Measures To Globalize University Network

Abstract: Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. announced a variety of joint academic and student and faculty exchange programs among its three "platform" universities. Sylvan also formally outlined its distinctive post-secondary educational model, the "Sylvan Signature," which it plans to apply to all current and future institutions in the network.

The rectors of Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM), Universidad del Valle de Mexico (UVM) and Universidad de las Americas (UDLA) signed memoranda of understanding calling for broad cooperation among the three institutions. The agreements cover a range of topics, including mutual recognition of student credits earned at other universities in the network, internship and student exchange programs, a faculty exchange initiative, and pledges to conduct joint research projects. In addition to announcing these joint programs, SIU discussed its plans to apply the "Sylvan Signature" to its current and future universities. This unique approach to post-secondary education combines relevant, quality content and the application of state-of-the-art technology to deliver a rich and rewarding educational experience to students, and a competitive advantage to SIU network institutions. The "Sylvan Signature" includes the following characteristics:
  • English Language Proficiency - The integration of English as a second language into SIU programs recognizes the broad worldwide acceptance of English as the common language of business, technology and many other fields.
  • Use of Information Technology - SIU network members will ensure students understand and be savvy users of information technology, and will use that same technology as a tool to deliver courses locally and internationally.
  • Career-Oriented, Internationally Recognized Curricula -- SIU network institutions will meet international standards, and offer degree and internship programs that will position them to be universities of choice for global employers seeking the most highly qualified professionals
Sylvan International Universities now operates a network of four fully accredited and well-branded post-secondary institutions with a total of nearly 55,000 students, including three, dubbed "platform" universities, which offer a range of academic degree programs. SIU was launched in 1999 when Sylvan acquired a 54% interest in UEM, a leading private university in Spain with an enrollment of about 7,000 students.

A second SIU "platform" university is UVM, one of Mexico's leading private universities with about 32,000 full time and 8,000 continuing education students, in which Sylvan announced it had acquired an 80% interest late last year. UDLA, host of this week's conference, is a 5,500-student private university offering 20 degree-granting programs in a variety of professional fields at its campus in Santiago. Last month, Sylvan announced it had acquired 80% of the parent company of UDLA.

In addition to these platform universities, Sylvan has also invested in a "center of excellence," the Les Roches Hotel Management School. SIU announced it had acquired a 100% interest in the school late last year. This 1,000-student facility offers a highly specialized and world-renowned career-oriented curriculum focused on the hospitality industry and hotel management. Sylvan has plans to offer the Les Roches curriculum to students at UEM, UVM, and UDLA in the future.
