Ingenohl's Glory - The German Navy 1938



An overview of naval affairs for 1938



GERMANY

Training vessels = the few surviving Kaisers and Konigs
Modernised but used for home defence = Badens
Modernised and in the Persian Gulf = Mackensens and Yorcks
Modernised L20Alpha (here named Deutschlands) in the Atlantic Fleet

The above are all historically-designed ships.Their names are as follows :-
1. Baden , Bayern , Sachsen , Wurttemburg
2. Mackensen, Prinz Eitel Friedrich, Graf Spee, Furst Bismarck
3. Yorck, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau
4. Deutschland , Preussen, Braunschweig, Mecklenburg


In addition the High Seas Fleet has continued to build during the 1920s and 1930s , there having been no naval disarmament in any fashion :-

Brief Details

a) Built early 1920s - RUPPRECHT class
   4 ships , 16" gun to match US and Japan
   Names = Rupprecht, Ludendorff, Tirpitz, Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse

b) Built mid 1920s - SEYDLITZ class
   4 ships , 16" gun (believed superior to British and Japanese 18")
   Names = Seydlitz, Lutzow, Blucher, Prinz Leopold

c) Built late 1920s - KRONPRINZ WILHELM
   5 ships , 18" gun (new German design)
   Names = Kronprinz Wilhelm , Prinz Adalbert, Prinz August Wilhelm, Prinz Oskar , Prinz Joachim

d) Built early 1930s - OLDENBURG
   4 ships , 16.25" gun (reversion to smaller calibre but better reliability)
   Names = Oldenburg , Luxemburg, Hessen, Lippe

e) Built mid 1930s - ADMIRAL INGENOHL
   4 ships , 16.25" gun (improvement on the previous class)
   Names = Admiral Ingenohl, Admiral Hipper , Admiral Boedicker , Admiral Paschewitz

Currently under construction is the 4-ship 18"-gunned (new model) Hindenburg class
- Hindenburg, Kressenstein , Derfflinger , Moltke




Thus by 1938 the order of battle for Germany is as follows :-

After the state visit of the Kaiser to Japan, Prinz Adalbert prevailed upon the admiralty to begin the construction of 4 large fleet carriers now (1938) under construction - the Boelcke class
