LEPTOSPIROSIS
BY
GERALDINE JANES
Leptosis can be a fatal bacterial disease that
damages the kidneys and liver of dogs,
humans, and other warm blooded animals.
There is four known kinds of Leptospirosis,
they are icterohaemorrhagae, cacicola,
grippotyphose, and pomona.
The current vaccine available on the market
only covers the first two types listed.
The vaccine companies are currently working
to find ways to protect against the
other two types.
Leptospirosis lives in the fluid of infected
animals, such as milk, urine, saliva, and
blood. Coming in contact with any of these
can infect your dog or even you.
Flooding waters can carry the disease, if it
is run off and has urine in it from another
infected animal. It can enter the system by
way of a cut or ingesting the fluid it is
being carried in.
Signs of Leptospirosis is seven (7) days of
anorexia (not eating), vomiting, lethargy,
depression, muscle pain, occasionally diarrhea
or bloody urine, the chills and
headache can accompany the other symptoms
as well.
If caught early enough, it can be treated with
penicillin. Once the kidneys have
healed a follow up treatment of tetracycline
drugs will be used.
It is highly recommended that dog owners watch
their dogs for flu like symptoms.
Especially those exposed to other animals
as well as wild animals and that have
access to ponds where urine may be present.
