Think for a moment how your life would change if you couldn't read a newspaper, magazine, or book. Because you have this "luxury", you may not realize how the morning paper can affect your life. Unfortunately, there are as many as 180,000 Californians who, due to blindness, impaired vision, or physical handicap, have had to learn to live without.
Now, through AUDIO VISION Radio Reading Service for the Blind, many people once caught in this information void have 24-hour, seven-days-a-week access to the local and national news and information that shapes our lives. Everything from the front-page stories to the grocery store advertisements is read by volunteers and is broadcast over what is called a "sub-frequency" of a public FM radio station. The broadcast can be heard only through the use of a special radio receiver. For the blind and print handicapped, this service is as big a part of their lives as breakfast, lunch and dinner. Anyone who cannot read due to blindness, impaired vision or physical handicap can request the AUDIO VISION serviceby simply calling or writing AUDIO VISION for an application form. Special access receivers are required for anyone to pick up our broadcast. They are available through AUDIO VISION, free of charge; how ever, we do ask for a $90.00 contribution from anyone who is financially able to assist us. This contribution enables us to purchase more special access receivers.
The ultimate goal of AUDIO VISION is to make this broadcast available to anyone who needs it without the use of expensive special access receivers. Our goal is to have readings of newspapers, magazines, books, etc., on an open FM broadcast. However, funding dictates how soon AUDIO VISION will be able to serve more of the blind and print handicapped population. All costs, whether for on-going operations or expansion, are met by contributions from foundations, corporations, organizations and individuals. Unlike most states, California does not financially support their radio reading services. We do not receive government funding. The success and growth of AUDIO VISION depends not only on financial contributions, but also its volunteers who read on the air and help in out-reach activities to increase public awareness about this informative service. More volunteers are always needed!
Because AUDIO VISION is completely free of charge to its listeners, the need for contributions and volunteers is critical. To obtain a receiver, volunteer your time, make a tax deductible contribution, or receive information, simply call AUDIO VISION AT (909) 797-4336, or write AUDIO VISION, 35242 Yucaipa Blvd., Ste. C, Yucaipa, CA 92399. AUDIO VISION is one of 140 radio reading services for the blind and print handicapped in the United States, and is a member of the National Association of Radio Reading Services.
