AUDIO VISION RADIO READING SERVICE FOR THE BLIND NEWS LETTER
VOLUME XXXX MAY 25, 2000

FINALLY,  A DREAM COME TRUE

Well, you have heard some talk about this for the last year and a half or so.  AUDIO VISION is going digital.  We got a grant from the John and Dorothy Leavy Foundation in Los Angeles for $13,000.00 for the conversion of our studios from analog to digital.  The entire project is going to cost us close to $17,000.00.

We have the three computers right now, and we have ordered the Wireready software and hardware to make the computers ready for broadcast.  We are expecting that delivery some time this week.  After we receive that, we will be installing sound cards, two for each computer, plus other controller cards and software.

We are very excited about this upgrade, and a bit nervous too.  What this system will do for us is automate our afternoon broadcast.  We will not have to cue up programs every 55 minutes.  The computer will automatically put programs on the air at the correct time.  This will not change so much the morning live readers routine, other than we will be recording the newspaper readers on the computer so we can rebroadcast the morning newspapers each evening at 6:00 P.M.  For the book and magazine readers, you will be recording directly to the computers.  We have purchased special key boards that look like controls for a recorder: Play, record, stop, Etc.  When your program is recorded, we will save it to disc with a name and copy it to a jazz drive disc.  From there we will take the jazz drive disc and put it in the control room computer and load your program in the day and hour slot that it is supposed to be played, and the computer will play it at the proper time.

Terry Sharon, formerly of Davis and Graeber Insurance Co., has generously volunteered the services of her husband to help with this installation.  Martin Sharon and Dirk Heartman were the two individuals who did the engineering when we moved to this new studio.  They will be installing the computers to the control boards in the studios.  This is schedule to be done Saturday, June 10.  We thank them and appreciate their volunteering for this job.  Terry, thank you.  It's good to have friends in high places.
