If Susan Smith is a “baby murderer”, then what should we call women who kill their preborn babies?
The other night I watched the movie Twelve Angry
Men, with Henry Fonda. Twelve jurors must decide the fate of an eighteen
year-old who is accused of killing his father with a knife. What looks
like an open and shut case is complicated by a lone juror(Henry Fonda)
who is not sure the evidence against the boy can stand up under scrutiny.
Fonda hammers away at prejudice and calls for another investigation of
the facts of the case. What begins as an eleven -to -one vote for a guilty
verdict ends with all twelve voting for acquittal.
What turned it around for Fonda’s character?
How did he pick off the jurors one by one? He forced them to think in terms
of their presuppositions. Take the murder weapon. Supposedly the switchblade
that the murderer used was unique. The boy even admitted to owning one
just like it. This was compelling evidence for the eleven jurors until
Fonda pulled out an identical knife from his pocket and plunged it into
the table. The other jurors were stunned. The knife had been purchased
for $6.00 at a store not more than a block from the murder scene. It seems
that the knife was not as unique as the prosecutor had claimed.
Twelve Angry Men reminds me of the abortion debate.
America seems content to dismiss the facts and allow millions of preborns
to die. And then along comes Susan Smith. Smith killed her two children
by strapping them in their car seats and driving them into a lake in Union,
South Carolina. This single event may be like the switch-blade that Henry
Fonda produced for the jurors in Twelve Angry Men. Could Smith’s deadly
actions be the wake up call that America needs to outlaw abortion?
Americans were shocked by what Smith did to her
children. As Smith was driven to the courthouse for her arraignment I saw
a women hold up a sign that said,”Hold your head up! You’re a baby murderer!”
Each and every day in America more than four-thousand women kill their
pre-born babies by abortion. Why don’t most Americans recognize these women
as “baby murderers”?
The reasons used by women who kill their babies
by means of an abortion are quite similar to those used by Susan Smith
in the murder of her children. I saw the interview on television of the
law enforcement official who says that Smith’s “whole world was crashing”.
She wanted a new relationship with another man. She soon learned that he
wasn’t ready for a ready made family. The children were now a burden to
Susan Smith. They were in the way of her future plans. They had become
an inconvenience. These reasons are identical to those given by women who
seek out an abortion for a unwanted pregnancy. Susan Smith’s children were
no longer wanted. A neighbor of Susan Smith said,”I’m just stunned and
disappointed in the mother. Evidently they were in the way of what she
wanted to do with her life”. The abortion logic has come home to roost.
