“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying , Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.”
(2 Peter 3:3-4)

 False teaching about Christ which denies His deity and power results in false thinking. The first question it raises is about the coming of Christ. To help the church in this, Peter reminds them of the things Jesus has said. Men misunderstood Him and  thought His return might be in that generation. Peter tells them that time is nothing with God - that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years (2 Peter 3:8) He will keep this promise as he kept all His promises, but according to His own time.
 The Lord is not slack  concerning His promise. He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (3:9). The last days are to be sad days, for scoffers shall make fun and say, “Ha , ha, where is the promise of Christ’s coming ? As far as we can see, everything is going on just as it has from the beginning of creation. Nature goes along in the even tender of her own way. There have been no signs of any radical change. The promise of His coming has failed.” These scoffers were evil men, but the sad truth today is that good men scoff at the promise of His coming. They make sport of the great hope of the church. How illogical was their reasoning about Christ’s not coming . Here they are! He had not come, therefore He was not coming. Nothing different had happened, so nothing unusual was going to happen. Because our Lord has not come yet, shall we give up hope? No, indeed. Rather, rejoice in the fact that His return comes nearer every day.

 Peter reminds these skeptics that a mighty flood did drown the world once, and Christ likened His coming to the flood in Matthew 24: 37-38. No doubt Peter heard Him say it. But next time God will destroy the earth by fire. Will it be a literal fire? Was the flood literal? Stored within the earth are oils and gases and enough fire to burn it up. Volcanoes are the release of these elements. Scientist now tell us we are sitting on a crust of earth only thirty miles in depth. Beneath this is a mass of molten matter. At a word, God could release a spout which would bury the earth in a literal fire. The devastation caused by the atomic bomb has proved the possibility of such a catastrophe. Or our may collide with some other heavenly body.
 We know that when God’s clock strikes the hour the earth will melt with a fervent heat. The earth shall be burned up and in the great explosion the heavens will pass away. Then new heavens and a new earth will emerge. (3:13)

 Today men are heady and high minded. They think they know everything. But this is to be expected. Satan will not give up his hold on this earth without protest. But his days of liberty are numbered and Jesus shall reign. Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming?....but that day of the Lord will come! Scorn and scoffing did not hold back the flood when it was unloosed. The angel’s mighty trumpet will make short work of men’s foolish “ I don’t believe it” and “I don’t think it is true” and I don’t see it”.
Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwells righteousness. It will not be entirely a destruction , but a new earth will be constructed. Look toward the East, for the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings ( Malachi 4:2).

 Don’t grow careless because He is delaying, for one day  the Lord will come suddenly. Be patient while He delays, knowing that He does it because He is long-suffering and would give the last man, woman, and child a chance to accept Him.
 In December, just before New Years Eve 1994, the San Francisco Chronicle ran a most interesting article informing people that it is too late to make News Years Eve reservations at any hotel with in a 200 mile radius of the Great Pyramids in Egypt. Oh, I’m not talking about New Years Eve, December 31,1994. I’m talking about New Years Eve December 31,1999. Virtually all the hotels within  200 miles of the Great Pyramids in Egypt, are already reserved for that event which is several years away. That is New Years Eve , the last day of the last year of this present Millennium, before the dawning of the year 2,000. Now why would they reserve so early to be there in Egypt  by the Great Pyramids. Well, many people believe that something very special is going to happen. Something very unique is going to take place at the beginning of the New Millennium, that is the year 2,000.
 Many people are convinced that something is going to break forth and it could very well be at that time. A lot of people associate the Great Pyramids with Mysticism, and Spirituality. There seems to be in our generation at this time a real hunger for Spirituality. The recent stories that have been covering the news magazines. “ The search for the Sacred”, November 28,1994, talking about the Baby Boomers looking for reality no longer in materialism, but in Spiritual Experiences. Another, Time Magazine had a cover story on “Angels” about three months ago.  People desiring to tap into the spiritual , the supernatural.
 We also read in US News & World Report from last spring, “ In God We Trust, Americas renewed faith in a cynical age. Over and over again pollsters and reporters tell us that there’s a search going on in our generation for spirituality. Even Hillary Rodman Clinton is on the cover with Bill Bennett and Peggy Noonman of Newsweek  in June talking about the politics of virtue. Looking for meaning and spirituality in politics. Is that even possible? So lots of people are on this quest for spirituality and some people believe that the new spirituality will be experienced at the turning of the Millennium when 1999 fades into the year 2,000.
 Some people believe things could happen. Most people believe things should happen. We who are observers of our culture watching what’s taking place are convinced something will happen. Things just can’t go on indefinitely in the present state of moral corruption and decay. It’s getting bizarre.
 This story was in the paper a few days ago, from Becksley , Ohio. It is an Associated Press story. People in Becksley, Ohio , where the average income is $48,000 per year. A typical small town, but here in Becksley Ohio people can’t tolerate smut. It’s grease and filth that scares them to death. Neighbors are fighting a proposal to tear down the adult video store and replace it with a McDonalds. “We think fast food is worse than pornography,” said Steve Elbert and his wife Anita Dawson. They and their two children live in a white brick home just behind the Becksley Adult Video store. They prefer  looking at it’s back wall to dealing with the traffic, odors, and trash they believe comes with fast food . “Imagine,”  Dawson says, “ smelling grease day in and day out.” So there’s a move with thousands of people petitioning to keep the porno shop and keep McDonalds out. Now who would have thought even 20 years ago that that would be the case in small town America, where people are marching and petitioning , radically committed to keep the porno shop in business and keeping McDonalds hamburgers out. It seems that they are more concerned about the grease that might go into their systems than the junk that pollutes their souls and minds. It’s insanity!
 People today are very much concerned about things that don’t really matter ultimately. Many of our generation are looking at the environmental crisis, the depletion of the Ozone layer, and don’t care about the deeper matters of pornography in a community, or abortion that continues epidemically. And so alot of people who watch the culture are rightly and understandably saying,”Things have got to change.” we cannot continue on with the stuff that’s flooding out homes via the TV tube. We cannot continue with the junk that’s tasking place on our school campuses, and in our communities. It cannot go on. Something has got to change.
 So you have the Mystics going to Egypt, hoping something will change. And I suggest to you as a Bible Prophecy teacher , that in deed  there really and truly shall be change. Change is immanent. Change is at hand. And that change is going to be the promise of His coming. I suggest to you that our text gives us a clue into just when that very well might be. Oh, skeptics and scoffers will come and say “Oh , Fred , you guys that talk about this stuff ,have been talking about this stuff for years. Where is the promise of His coming?” Let them skept and scoff, because in their skepting and scoffing they are fulfilling the prophecy of verse 3 , in the last days scoffers shall come. And they shall say where is the promise of His coming? But Peter goes on to tell you directly. “This I don’t want you to be ignorant of ,” he says in verse 8 , “that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years.”  Now that makes things very interesting to me. Maybe you’ve wondered also. Jesus said,” Behold I come quickly,” there in the Book of Revelation. And you say quickly? Where’s He been?  I mean that was two thousand years ago  when He made that statement. “Behold I come quickly.” But wait, Peter says, “understand this as it concerns the last days; with the Lord a thousand years is a single day.” That means, He’s only been gone for two days, which is not a long time, and He’s coming back soon. I suggest to you that the Millennium that we are heading into, the year 2000, is prophetically  significant. What do you mean Fred?  Just this, that if Peter is telling you and me a day is a thousand years , a thousand years is as day, think with me now, you may want to write this down and check it out later. There is significance  when you see the pattern of God’s word , as it relates to days. Let me say this, from a Jewish perspective , those who study Old Testament history , as well as Christian scholars from the first century on have done some interesting calculations as it relates to the Bible and its time table. By tracing back the various genealogies that are given in the scriptures, you can place man in the Garden of Eden around the year 4,000 BC , or 6,000 years ago, at the year 2,000 if you would like. So what you say! Here’s what.  The bible says something about days, a day is as a 1,000 years, a 1,000 years is as a day, what happens in the sixth day, the seventh day Biblically?  We know that God ordained  there in the book of Exodus chapter 20 verse 19, that men shall work 6 days by the sweat of their brow, but on the 7th day there is to be a Sabbath. A day of rest and relaxation. Six days of work followed by one day of rest. Also we read in Exodus 23:10: that for six years men were to till the land, harvest the crops, tend the orchards, but the 7th year the land was to rest  and no work was to be done. And God would meet their needs financially. He would see them through that 7th sabbatical year.
 That year would begin with the blowing of the trumpet and the year would be at rest. So 6 days men work, 6 years the land is tilled, but in the 7th things just kick back and God sees them through miraculously.
 Finally, in Exodus 21: 2, in that particular scripture God declares that man can only hold a person in slavery , in that culture for 6 years. At the beginning of the 7th year he is to be set free. So, what’s the picture? Simply this, 6 the number of working, the number of sweating, the number of slavery, but 7 , in the 7th day, in the 7th year, its freedom and liberty. The blowing of the trumpet, relaxing and vacationing if you would and all things going into this day of rest. The Sabbath day. Now, what are you saying Fred? Just this, we have been enslaved for 6,000 years (6days) . We’ve been sweating from our brow for 6,000 years (6days) . We’ve been tilling the ground trying to make a living for 6,000 years (6days), but there is coming a 7th period, if genealogist are correct, and I believe they are, a 7th day is on the verge of dawning in the year 2,000. Six days will be completed from 4,000 BC and now we head  towards 2,000AD , for a total of 6,000. A day is as a 1,000 years , and a 1,000 years is as a day. Resting and relaxing in the time the Bible calls “The time of refreshment.” We call this in our terminology,”The Millennium.” A thousand years.  When does that happen? when Jesus Christ comes back to earth and we are told in Isaiah that wonderful things will take place.  That men will study war no more, sickness will not blanket the world any longer, people shall live to be 1,000 years old, and  Isaiah 65, the wolf will lie down with the lamb, and the lion shall eat straw.
 Bible students, think with me now, I want to clarify something of the utmost importance for your understanding prophecy: Six thousand years or six days have gone by and we are headed for the sabbatical or millennium around the turn of this  next major event , 1999 turning into the year 2,000. Even as in the 7th day and the 7th sabbatical year, the year of Jubilee, for you bible students, the trumpet was blown , and when the trumpet was blown the people would know it’s a time of rest. Debts are canceled. Work ceases. The way the Millennium is going to be when Christ comes back.

 Now turn with me to 1 Corinthians, and we will begin to piece together a very important picture. In 1 Corinthians 15: Paul, the apostle is talking about the day when the Lord descends, that day I believe is right at hand, Paul says in verse 51 of 1Corinthians 15: “Behold I show you a mystery.” The Greek word there is mysterion, which means something previously hidden, not understood. But now it’s made known. The vale is lifted off and here’s the mystery. I show you a mystery, and this next phrase I believe should be written down, “we shall not all sleep, but shall all be changed( we will be transformed). How? In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. When? At the last trump, (note that).  Just like in the sabbatical year and in the Jubilee, the trump was sounded. The trumpet ( verse 52 ) shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed.
 A time is coming when you are going to hear the last trump. Notice it’s the last trump. Now there are many people that will come to you and confuse your theology by telling you this verse speaks of the last trump in Revelation chapter 11. For you see , Revelation 8-11 talks about the tribulation period when the world goes through  Hell on earth. When 100 pound hailstones plummet the planet. When our ocean turns to blood. When earthquakes happen and islands disappear. When the Antichrist arises and forces people to take the Mark of the Beast, if they want to survive economically. There are these judgments in Revelation 8-11 called the trumpet judgments. They number 7. And they say the last trumpet is the last of those tribulation trumpets, which means , they will say, you’re going through the tribulation period.
 Is this the last trumpet that is  being referred too?  I say no way! Let me show you why. Turn to 1 Thesolonians 4 and I will show you what that last trumpet is. 1Thesolonian 4 , that classic text where it refers to the last trump, when at last there is going to be rest , peace , and prosperity. For the Lord, you see, (verse 16) himself shall descend from heaven with the shout of the voice of the archangel and with this ( watch this) the trump of God the dead in Christ shall rise first, then we which are alive at that time  which remain shall be caught up . (underline caught up ). It’s from the Greek word harpazo, which is translated into the Latin word rapturos, from which we get our word rapture. This is the rapture. The Lord shall descend, the trumpet shall sound, the trumpet of God . We that are alive at that time when the 7th day begins, the 7,000th year, the millennium, will be caught up to meet the Lord in the clouds. We’ll be caught up to meet him and be with him, wherefore comfort one another (verse 18) with these words.” Would you be comforted if I told you the last trump is the trumpet of Revelation 11. So you’d better go buy guns, store up beans and get gold, you’re going through hell on earth. Happy New Year!
 Is that a comfort? I don’t think so. The comfort is, wait a minute, a different trumpet, not a trumpet from an angel (REV 8-11) . Angels blow those trumpets. This is the trump of God. God Himself , the Lord Himself descends and blows the trump of God. Then we are taken up in the rapture. Then God’s wrath comes down on a Christ rejecting, sinful world in a period of time called “ the wrath of the Lamb.” Now that time of tribulation, when Hell on earth brakes out, is talked about in chapters 6-19 of  the book of Revelation.
 Revelation, chapter 6, when it all starts to come down, we read about the people who experience a crying out, ( verse 16 ), they cry out to the mountains , to the rocks and they say,” Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of his wrath has come , who shall be able to stand? Are we going to be there?
 Now back to 1 Thessalonians 4:16, “ The Lord descends with a trump, we go up, comfort each other with this word. Because you see, in talking about the end times Paul says in verse 1 chapter 5 of 1 Thessalonians , “But of the times and seasons brethren you have no need that I write unto you,” and then he says in verse 9 ,” For God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation.” God has not appointed us to wrath, comfort each other with these words of the last trump, because God has not intending you to feel the wrath that’s already been taken care of by the Lamb on the cross. We’re going up!  Now, it comes together for me most interestingly in a passage that blows my mind concerning this trumpet that’s soon to be sounded.
 Turn back to Exodus 19, and here’s the question for those of you  who are dealing with prophecy issues. If that’s the last trump, the trump of God, that is the Rapture, when he comes and blows His horn ,and we go up together to meet the Lord. If that’s the last trump of God, then where’s the first trump?
 Exodus 19:10, “ The Lord said to Moses, “go to the people , sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments and let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mt. Sinai in the sight of all the people.” Verse 13 last phrase, “ but when the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain.” Verse 16, “And it came to pass on the third day in the morning at the beginning of the third day , that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud came upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound.” Verse 19, ”When the voice of the trumpet sounded long and waxed louder, Moses spoke and God answered him by a voice and the Lord came down upon Mt. Sinai, and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mountain.” The Lord comes down, Moses goes up. When? When the trumpet of God , the first trumpet is sounded. Now, when the trumpet sounded Exodus 19, Gods people on earth , the Jews, are gathered together to meet with Him and hear from Him.
 When the last trumpet is sounded God’s people , the church, are going to be taken up to heaven to meet with Him even as they were called together to meet with Him, so shall we be called together at the last trump. The first trump for the Jews, the earthly people, the last trump for the church, the heavenly people. The trump is not a trump of judgment, it’s the trump of gathering together, going to heaven. The Lord comes down, we go up to meet with in the clouds and off we go for a wonderful marriage feast together. Now notice this, on the third day , on the third day , over an over again in this passage. Why the third day? Remember, a day is as a thousand years, a thousand years is as a day. What does that mean , Fred?  The answer is found in Hosea chapter 6.
 Hosea 6 is a most intriguing prophecy as it relates to these people the Jews. In Hosea 6 God says this ( and all bible scholars agree this prophecy deals with the Jewish people), “ The people say come let’s return to the Lord for he hath torn us, but He will heal us ; He has smitten us and He will bind us: He will revive us after two days: He will raise us up on the third day and we shall live in His sight.” What does this mean? We’ve been torn and beaten up for two days, but in the third day, just like in Exodus 19, the trumpet sounds and in the third day we are going to live. You see, they’ve been beaten up and torn for two days , for you see,  two thousand years ago the Jewish people  cried in the streets of Jerusalem, “Crucify Him! We will not have this man rule over us. Pilot would say, “ but He is your King.” And they responded , “we have no king but Caesar.” So they crucified their king. The result, the death of Jesus Christ ,certainly, but for Israel with in a few years their temple was burned down, the Romans came marching through under the leadership of General Titus. Titus destroyed the city and drove the Jews out of their home country and for two days or two thousand years they were torn down  and beaten up. Put down and fried in the ovens of the concentration camps of the Germans. Driven from land to land. Nowhere to go and yet unlike any other people in the history of the world  they retained their identity, their language, their culture and customs and their religion, without a homeland.

 In the third day, after 2,000 years of wandering, something happened as the third day began to approach, because of the horrors of the Holocaust , suddenly for a moment in time, world sympathy went with the Jews. May 14,1948, the U N declared, “ Let the Jewish people have a homeland.” They carved out the little nation of Israel, exactly as the prophets predicted. A nation was born in a day, May 14,1948. Suddenly as the third day approaches after 2,000 years or 2 days ; after 2 days of being torn down , beaten up , persecuted, they were revived. They are brought into the land. As the third day fully comes, when it finally fully comes, perhaps around the year 2,000. Then they are going to be revived spiritually, for you see the church will be taken up when the trumpet is sounded. We go to heaven. God’s spirit comes down upon the people of Israel, the Jewish nation.  In Romans 9, 10 and 11 all of Israel  shall be born again, saved. Revived in the third day. Two days after rejecting Christ, of being beaten up, on the third day being revived again. Amazing! But there’s something I find even  to me more exciting.

I believe everything in the Bible is there, not incidentally, but as God has prepared each phrase and every word to communicate a truth for you and me. In John chapter 2, something else happens on the third day that has gotten my attention. We read in John  chapter 2, that Jesus Christ was about to do his first miracle in the little Israeli town of Cana in the region of Galilee. Check this out, and on the third day there was a marriage in Cana. The mother of Jesus was there , as well as Jesus and His disciples. When? The third day! What took place? A marriage! Who was there? Jesus and His disciples. Could this be another  indication of when the marriage of the Lamb and His disciples( you and me) when that marriage is to be? I think so! The third day when the Jews are revived. When? When the church is taken up. When does this happen? On the third day, the marriage feast I believe fulfilling John chapter 2 prophetically.

 Fred, let me get this straight, I want to make sure I’m understanding you correctly. Are you suggesting to us that , are you saying that because of Peter’s  prophecy, a day is as a thousand years, a thousand years is as a day , and because  for 6 days  there was labor, and 6 years there was slavery and sweat, but in the 7th day when the trumpet sounded there was rest, and refreshment and prosperity and peace. And are you saying, Fred , that man has been on the scene now for 6,000 years, or 6 days and now in the morning as we are entering the 7th day, that, that’s going to be the time that Christ comes back. The trumpet sounds, and we are gathered up to heaven, and are you suggesting that this is going to be Jan 1, AD , 2000, which fulfills 6 full days. Are you saying that Fred? Jan 1 A D , 2000?  Yes!  No, just kidding! No because Jesus said something about that. Now it’s interesting to me when the disciples came to Jesus and they said to Him Lord, What is the sign of your coming and the end of this age? A  lot of people make fun of me because I talk alot about prophecy. They scoff at me. Even good Christian brothers and sisters say to me , “ I don’t really care about prophecy. I don’t really care about pre-trib, mid-trib, post-trib debate. I don’t really care when the Lord comes as long as I am in Heaven. No need to worry.” But, when they came to Jesus and said to Jesus , “ tell us the signs of thy coming and the end of this age.” Jesus didn’t say,”Don’t worry, just talk to me and learn about me and don’t get hung up in prophecy. Don’t look for signs, and don’t try to figure, just don’t!” Is that what he said? No! Like any good preacher Jesus answered their questions in two chapters. He went on and on , in one of His longest teachings He ever gave on earth. In answer to what?  Their question ,What about the end times? He said , I’m glad you asked and He began this teaching called the Olivet Discourse, which is one of the longest teachings Jesus  ever gave anyone and it relates to prophecy.  If somebody says to me I just think you over emphasize prophecy. I just want to teach the Bible  and read the Bible. Did you know this?  That one third of the Bible is prophecy. So for a person to say , I’m not going to teach it, it’s too controversial, it’s too hard to understand. I just want to be a Bible student. You cannot  be a Bible student with out being a student of Bible prophecy. It’s impossible. One third of the Bible deals with prophecy. So if you want to be a Bible student you have to become a student of Bible prophecy.  God says this of all the areas of spiritual discussion in trying to communicate that He is who He claims to be and He says it very clearly concerning the people of that time as they were believing in other Gods and idols;” Let them bring them forth and show us what shall happen. Let them show the former things , what they be, that we may consider them and let them make known the later end. Declare to us the things to come. Show us the things that are to be, here after, that we may know that you are Gods.” God says; bring here other idols, these other philosophies and let them do something which I challenge them. Let them predict the future and then  we will know.”

 None of the other religions, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, ect, their bibles have no prophecy in them, because false gods cannot predict the future. This is what sets our God apart and above all others. Prophecy! So we need to be students of prophecy because in so sharing prophecy people can see  that our God is unique among all other so called gods and spiritual entities. He predicts the future and we watch it unfold.

 If you want to be effective in evangelizing , sharing the good news, talk to people at work, at school, about current events and Bible prophecy. People will tune you in. You can talk about other things like predestination, justification, ect and they will turn you off and walk away.  Last year the number one info-mercial by far was the Psychic Hotline, with Dione Warwick.( She doesn’t even know the way to San Jose). It just goes to show you that people are craving information about the future. And guess what? One third of the Bible tells people about events that were spoken of prophetically and have been fulfilled so we can say look at this or are currently being fulfilled  before our very eyes.

 Jesus said this when they said show us the signs of thy coming and the end of the age. Turn to Matthew 24. If anyone comes to you and says this is the day Jesus is coming back or this is the hour of the rapture; Jesus said in verse 36.” But that day and hour knowth no man.” No one knows that day and no one knows that hour. He said, ”No not the angels of heaven but my Father only.” Jesus doesn’t even know, only the father knows. And anyone who claims to know the day and the hour are wrong!
 But, Paul said in 1 Thessalonians Chapter 5 :1; “ But brethren of the times and the seasons you are not ignorant.” We don’t know the day or the hour but we can and should know the times and the seasons. Now He says in Matthew 24:32; Now learn the parable of the fig tree. Does God want us to study prophecy? Jesus taught us He does. Jesus said learn this parable. In End Times understanding this is something we should study carefully. “When it’s branch is yet tender and it brings forth leaves you know that summer is near.(the season) So like wise when you see all these things know that it is near( what is?) My coming, even at the very door. Truly I say to you (verse34) this generation (what generation?  The generation that sees the budding of the fig tree.) shall not pass away. There’s going to be a generation that shall not die. There’s going to be a generation that will hear the trumpet of God, the last trump and they will be taken up to meet with the Lord in the clouds and go to heaven. What generation?  The generation  Jesus is saying, that sees the budding of the fig tree. What’s the fig tree? Six times the fig tree is used. It’s used in Judges, Joshua, Jeremiah and in Hosea . It’s always used as a symbol of the nation of Israel, even to this day. Now Jesus is saying there will be a time when the fig tree will spring to life. Previously thought to be dead , like a tree in winter, loosing it’s leaves. But, in spring time something happens and when the tree buds forth it comes to life. I suggest to you that Jesus is saying to us, most clearly to me, the generation that se’s the budding of the nation of Israel back to life again is the last generation. That generation will not pass away. They are not going to die. That generation shall hear the trump of God, that generation will be the generation that is caught up. What generation is that? The generation that saw the birthing of Israel in 1948. For two thousand years the nation of Israel was thought to be dead. They were driven out of their homeland. They wandered about for two thousand years, but then as the prophet declared, can this be the nation being born in a day? Yes. In one day the UN in may 1948 said let Israel be a nation again. The dead tree seemingly sprung to life. We are that final generation.
