Ahhh, what does it mean, a sorority,

to the one with a heart of gold?

Tis to love and to serve, and high ideals preserve,

with a wealth of joy untold.

Brief History of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Twenty-two trailblazing women founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on the campus of Howard University, January 13, 1913. At the inception of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1913 our 22 founders envisioned an organization of college women pledged to serious endeavor and community service.

These youthful students demonstrated a vital concern for social welfare, academic excellence, and cultural enrichment, de-emphasizing the social side of sorority life. Their ideas of scholarship and service have withstood the test of time, and today Delta Sigma Theta is a public service organization, dedicated to a program of sharing membership skills and organizational services in the public interest.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority provides a means for a member to maintain a close affiliation with her profession, encourages her interests and achievements, and gives its members the distinction of belonging to a somewhat exclusive group. Deltas are women who are not just committed to public service but to attaining the highest educational, moral, and sisterly standards as possible. You may see examples of this in Delta women on University campuses, churches, or in the famous Delta women present in our society.

In 1930, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated. The record of incorporation is filed in the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C. Today there are over 190,000 members. The Sorority currently has 900-plus chapters located in the United States, Japan, Germany, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, the Bahamas, the Republic of Korea and the Virgin Islands.
