Our Eco-Tip of the Month:
Quick Garden Tips
- To keep cats out of your garden, use chicken wire. To save your garden, put chicken wire flat
on the ground on top of your mulch. Your plants can grow up through it, but the cats will stay away because they don't like the feeling of it under their paws.
- To keep pests off your growing fruit, cover them with an old stocking or knee-high.
Tie off each end. It will grow as the fruit does.
- Herbs prefer coarse sand as mulch. Outside, use an inch, inside a half-inch around the
stems. Don’t use beach or playbox sand-- it’s too fine. This will drain better, make the
plant grow better, and keep the plant cleaner when it rains or you water it.
- Make large pots lighter. Take up space with downturned soda cans for big containers. The aluminum won’t
affect the plants, and the pot will be lighter. It will also cost less to fill it. Transfer the
plant into the pot as usual.
- Transfer fertilizer, such as fish emulsion, into old ketchup plastic bottles. Make sure to
write what it is, and the concentration formula, on the bottle. This way, you don’t have to
maneuver a heavy bottle to get 2 Tbsp, you just squirt it out. Make sure to keep all transferred items in a special high or locked area so that children won't mistake the new product for what it used to be.
- L.E.A.F. will soon be offering a collection of Eco Tip Sheets for sale. Subjects such as making dried fruit for use in craft projects, terracing a garden, creating your own indoor faux rock wall,
nature printing with items from your yard, training your bushes into sculpted plant animals, making faux scrimshaw w/ iron-on clay, and mixing your own non-toxic silver cleaner will be included. As always, all proceeds will benefit our breeding and other animal programs.
