Summer of 2000 saw much ado about the U.S. Coast Guard granting Eureka, California "Official Coast Guard City Status". Even while this was being planned and executed with great fanfare including numerous flags and a big show of fireworks the city and it's residents were "cleaning up the streets" of homeless people a large percentage of who were combat and other veterans. Residents of the area around 4041 F St. (just outside the city limits) rose up in numbers against the establishment of that building as a home for homeless veterans and presented the planning commission with a petition signed by approximately 200 people opposed to it, citing every technicality they could think of and vilifying both veterans and homeless people in general as a "danger to their women and children" among other exagerations.
Therefore we the undersigned do hereby request the Coast Guard to rescind this "Official Coast Guard City Status" as a slap in the face and evil disclaimer, not only to the military veterans in greatest need but to active military personnel; future veterans, some percentage of who will always need help of this sort.
