Gamma Sigma Sigma is a national service sorority based on the ideals of service, friendship and equality. In 1952, representatives from eight service-dedicated organizations from across the nation met in Beekman Towers in New York City for the first Gamma Sigma Sigma national convention. The name Gamma Sigma Sigma, the name of the service organization from Drexel Institute of Technology, was chosen for the new national sorority. Maroon and white, the recognized colors of the Omega Service Sorority of Brooklyn College, were established as the official sorority colors. The official pin and other symbols of Alpha Gamma Chi, which had members at both Los Angeles City College and the University of Houston, were adopted as the official insignia of Gamma Sigma Sigma. The first individuals chapter names were also given out here. At the next national convention in 1955, the sorority's motto, "Unity in Service", was accepted.
Throughout the years, Gamma Sigma Sigma has truly fulfilled its purpose of "assembling college and university students in the spirit of service to humanity". The members of Gamma Sigma Sigma across the nation have volunteered many hours of their time to service projects both on campus and in the community. Gamma Sigma Sigma has supported numerous projects and organizations through the years like Special Olympics, the Red Cross, the March of Dimes and the MS Society. Gamma Sig girls can be found participating in community clean-up efforts, helping out at blood drives, sewing ABC quilts, tutoring and mentoring children, throwing parties at retirement homes, and doing many other things in the spirit of service to humanity.
The second part of Gamma Sigma Sigma's purpose is to "develop friendships among students of all nationalities and creeds". Each chapter and each member across the nation is unique, but we're all connected by friendship and a desire to provide service to others.
