Texas Indigo Snake



Description:
- The Texas Indigo Snake may reach up to 8.5
feet long and weigh up to 5.5 pounds.
- The Texas Indigo Snake is shiny and somewhat
translucent with a brown-black coloration. Their underside is a combination of cloudy
orange and blue-gray. The sides of their head is patterned with black or brown lines,
radiating from the eye.
- There is a distinction between the
two female snakes. One has 3 stripes down each side of the lower jaw and the other has 4
stripes on each side of the lower jaw.

Lays 4 - 12 eggs in May; eggs hatched in early fall; hatchlings are
roughly l' in length.
Man, through commercial collecting made possible
through the snake's slowness and conspicuousness, and through destruction of the snake's
mature forest habitat; additionally, exposure to gasoline fumes during rattlesnake
"roundups" and pesticide may cause mortality
