The bottlenose dolphin is probably the most familiar species due to its coastal distribution and widespread use in films and captivity. In some areas, bottlenose dolphins can reach up to 3.8 m (12.5 ft) in length. Bottlenose dolphins eat a wide assortment of fishes, squid, and shrimp using a variety of feeding behaviours, including feeding behind shrimp boats and chasing fish onto mudbanks. Bottlenose dolphins live in open societies, with the strongest bonds being between a mother and her calf. Bottlenose dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico occur mostly on the continental shelf.

My favourite type of dolphin is the bottlenose, they are so beautiful!

The dolphins (family Delphinidae) are a sub-group of the toothed whales (sub-order Odontoceti). Included in this group are species which some people commonly think are whales, such as the killer whale and pilot whale, although they are actually dolphins.

There are currently 33 recognised species of dolphin, of which 5 have been reported from the Hebrides, these include the:

Atlantic-white sided, bottlenose, common, white beaked,Risso
