BIRTH PLACE: Osijek, Croatia

Joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in August '99 for a reported fee of $5.67 million. Was released by the 1997-98 European champions Real Madrid after falling out with coach John Toshack. During his final two seasons at Real, Suker struggled to maintain a first team place, firstly under Jupp Heynckes and then subsequently under Guus Hiddink and Toshack. Heavily left-sided, Suker can take on men and beat them before unleashing a powerful shot. Is known as "Suker-man" by his teammates because of his out-of-this-world footballing skills. Won the Golden Boot award at the 1998 World Cup with his six goals helping Croatia to third place. Had success early in his career when he played a leading role in Yugoslavia's World Youth Cup success in Chile during the 80's, scoring six goals. Was chosen in Yugoslavia's 1990 World Cup squad despite never having won a full cap. However he never got off the bench at the 1990 World Cup and had to wait till February 1991 before his first cap arrived. After modest totals of six and 13 in his first two seasons for Sevilla in Spain, Suker scored 23 times in the 1993-94 season, a tally only bettered by Barcelona's Brazilian Romario. In the summer of 1996 he transferred to Real Madrid and made an immediate impact, scoring 24 goals and starting all 38 league games in his first season in the Spanish capital. With Suker in fine form, Croatia reached the quarterfinals of the European championship in 1996.
