Dissolving a Solid in Water


Purpose: Can you dissolve as much of a solid  as you wish  in  water?

Balance                        test tubes                      No. 2 stoppers               test tube rack
water                            graduated cylinder     scoopula                      orange solid 

Potassium Dichromate is a  heavy metal It is a  health hazard
EVERYONE  must wash their hands with soap and water before leaving class. Keep you hands  out of your mouth!!

Procedure

  1. Place 5 cm3 of water in one test tube and 20.0 cm3 of water in another.
  2. 2. Add 0.30 g of orange solid to each tube, then stopper and shake thoroughly.

3. If the solution cools as the solid dissolves, try to keep the temperature fairly constant by warming the test tube with your hand.

4. Add another 0.30 g of orange solid to each solution.
