Purpose: Are there other ways to tell substances apart?
Cautions: Sulfuric acid is highly corrosive, so try not to spill it or get any on your hands, clothing, or books. If you do, wash it off immediately with water and tell your teacher. Always wear safety glasses when you work with acids and gases.
Materials: Peg board 2 small clamps 6 small test tubes test tube rack 2 large test tubes plastic container No. 4 stopper lime water sulfuric acid 2 right-angle glass bend
Procedure:
Set up test tube on pegboard with stopper and right angle bend. Use a tube to collect gas in a second test tube turned upside down in a beaker of water. Fill 1/2 a test tube with sulfuric acid and 7-cm lengths of magnesium ribbon to produce several test tubes of gas.
Try to light tubes of gas, using first a burning splint and then a glowing one. Try it holding some of the tubes upside down and some right-side up.
Blue dot question Blue dot question
Try bubbling a little of the gas into limewater. Repeat the experiment, using magnesium carbonate instead of magnesium.
