Experiment 5.4
The Separation of a Mixture of Solids
Materials Home

Purpose:
Can you separate 2 solids, using their solubility in water?

Cautions: None

Materials:
Mixture                                               filter paper
2 Test tubes                                         evaporating dish
2 stoppers                                            rack
burner                                                 goggles
burner stand

Procedure:

  1. Put about 1.5 g of the mixture into a test tube, and add 5 cm3 of water.
  2. Stopper the tube and shake it for several minutes.

Do you think either substance dissolved?

  3. Filter out the undissolved solid, as shown in figure 5.5 on page 97.
  4. Wash the precipitate on the filter paper by pouring an additional 10 cm3 of water into the                              funnel.
  5. Put about 5 cm3 of the clear liquid-the filtrate-into an evaporating dish and boil it, SLOWLY, to dryness.

Have the two substances been separated?
