502 Liberators and 157 Fortresses of 15.USAAF attacked on refineries in Korenburg, Vienna/Floridsdorf, Moosbierbaum, Schwechat, Winterhafen and Lobau. Also bombs hit the aircraft factory at Schwechat and marshalling yard at Vienna/Floridsdorf. Fighter cover was made by 321 fighters - 131 Lightnings, 46 Thunderbolts and 144 Mustangs.
I. Jagdkorps sent against this raid 203 fighter planes. But only 186 of them had a contact with the enemy forces. From Fels am Wagram airfield took off II./ JG 27 and from G�tzendorf started to the air at 0834 also I./ JG 302. Both Gruppen, flying messerschmitts 109 G-6, built a 51 aircraft formation. Immediately they joined the battle with American fighters at 8000 m. The way to the bombers was hard. Later were boxes of bombers attacked by 27 Me 410 from II./ ZG 1 (Wels airfield). Also some mention of Me 410 from ZG 26 is noticed. (Can you someone help with some additional info?mail me)
From Unterschlauersbach took off 28 Focke Wulfs, which belonged to II./ JG 300. They were also joined by 33 Bf 109 G-6 from I./ JG 300 (Herzogenaurach). Both units were from 7. Jagddivision, with the Headquarters in M�nchen.
Claims of these two units are at present not know to me. But they lost five planes in the area.
Near Klosterneuburg died Oblt. Gerhard Pilz from 1./ JG 300 on Bf 109 G-6 "weisse 15" (SQ + IX).
Near Vienna was wounded in the battle Ofw. Kurt Muschner from 2./ JG 300. He flew Bf 109 G-6/U 2, W.Nr.412254 "rote 10" (SC + YL).
Rohrbach/ Donau was the area where landed on parachute Uffz. Hinrich Horstk�tter, 2./JG300, after his Bf 109 G-6 W.Nr.412268 "rote 13" (SC +IZ) was hit in the battle. Pilot was wounded.
Lt. Erich Schrubba from 6./ JG 300 died on board of Fw 190 A-8 near Tulln/ Donau after his machine was hit in the battle.
On Fels am Wagram/Donau died Fw. Gerhard Schauerte, 5./ JG 300. He flew Fw 190 A-8 W.Nr.170418 "rote 10".
Pilots of I./ JG 302 claimed four B-24, three B-24 HSS and three P-51. But lost three pilots.
Fw. Hans Spielhagen, 1./ JG 302, died near Raspunka, Slovakia after the Battle with fighters. He flew Bf 109 G-6 "Weisse 9" W.Nr.411703.
Another loss was Fw. Kurt Nachtigall from 3. staffel. His Bf 109 hit the ground in area of Szenc (Senec), then Hungary, now Slovakia.
Lt. Peter Altmeyer died near Zisteldorf, his Bf 109 W.Nr.440309 not controlled hit the ground in this area with the pilot on board.
Americans lost 34 Liberators, 3 Fortresses, 2 Lightnings, 2 Mustangs and 2 Thunderbolts. Luftwaffe losses were 5 Bf 109, 3 Fw 190, 4 Bf 110 and 13 Me 410. More, MKHL lost 3 Me 109 G-6 and Slovak emergency flight of Slovak Air Arm lost 7 aircraft Bf 109 G-6.
