Axolotls

Axolotls are a type of salamander native to Mexico. They are not a fast active pet and have amazing abilities if injured - even if they lose a body part, they heal quickly and regenerate lost parts such as legs. They lose this ability if they undergo metamorphosis into a salamander. Axolotls have a life span of ten to fifteen years and are quite hardy. Their skin and gills are sensitive and quite soft, but handling is not advised as they can exchange through moist skin. They can spend short times out of water as long as their skin does not dry out. The colour of the gills is a good indication of their health - it is usually bright red as the gills are filled with blood.

Axolotls are best kept in filtered water or water that is changed every day. Treat the water as you would a normal aquarium, for example remove the chlorine, keep the pH around 6.5 - 7.5 and so on.
