Seahorses

Southern knight seahorses are temperate marine fish found in coastal waters of south-eastern Australia and New Zealand. An unusual feature of the seahorse is the male becomes pregnant and gives birth to hundreds of baby seahorses at breeding time. They can live up to nine years in captivity. Some people regard them as a mystical creature as their strange appearance has fascinated man for a long time.

The southern knight seahorse is now being bred in captivity, helping to stop the depletion of the wild stocks. Being tank bred, these seahorses are easy to keep and have a good tolerance of variations in temperature and salinity. Frozen food makes feeding easy, and hatchery conditions ensure healthy disease free specimens. Seahorses tolerate an indoor aquarium without a heater in a majority of Australian conditions.
