Brandenburger Tor, Berlin Wall, Berlin, November 13, 1989 |
Brandenburger Tor, sans Wall, Berlin, July 7, 1990 |
The above two pictures best summarize my second year
in Germany. While I was there, East Germany went through a revolution,
millions of East Germans came to West Germany, and the course of world
history changed overnight. In fact, I happened to be in Berlin the week
of November 13 - 18, 1989, just a few days after the Wall fell on November
9. It was a wild, wild, wild time. It was also where I met my future wife.
Berlin
November 13, 1989, about 4:30 pm. An East German soldier stands guard over the Wall at Brandenburger Tor. |
November 13, 1989, about 11:00 pm. Derrin and I, and thousands of others, decide it is time for the Wall to go. Later, while a Canadian was borrowing my hammer, some West German police walked up behind him and confiscated it. I did not say to the police, "Hey, that's my hammer!" |
Several sections of the Wall are cut open to make more border crossings. |
