Random Facts about "The Mawr"

*There are approximately 1200 students at Bryn Mawr College, and 100% of them are female. There are 2 male Haverford students living on campus on the second floor of Denbigh Hall, and at least one more in Haffner Hall. Bryn Mawr is smaller than my high school by about 600-700 students.

*Bryn Mawr College is, for the most part, located in Bryn Mawr, PA. However, Brecon Hall is located in Rosemont, PA--the road you must cross to reach Brecon is the township line.

*Tuition, room, and board are approximately $33,000 per year. No, I didn't add an extra zero in, switch numbers, or give the number for all four years of college.

*There are eight residence halls: Erdman, Rhoads, Haffner, Brecon, Denbigh, Merion, Batten (for grad students), and Perry(). Brecon is pronounced "Breh-kihn."

*Erdman was designed by the famous architect Louis Kahn. It also looks like a morgue inside. Haffner looks like a hospital inside the living area.

*Brecon Hall used to be apartment housing for graduate students; before that, it was a private school. It now houses the Brecon Warriors, a few Russian students, and a variety of other people.

*The third floor of Denbigh and the third floor of the Pems used to be maid's quarters. I live on the third floor of Denbigh Hall. Editorial comment?

*At the Health Center, it's never an illness, it's always just a cold. Would you like some juice?

*Thomas Great Hall is built like a castle. Don't believe me? Check it out.

*"Bryn Mawr" is Welsh for two little hills or two big hills...Can't remember which.

*Xenia the Warrior Princess is listed in the Bryn Mawr Finding Guide. Look under "Princess."

*There are only two degrees of Bryn Mawr separation. Trust me on this. I KNOW it's true.

*The words to the song freshmen and juniors sing on Lantern Night, Sophias, are from Theucydides' funeral oration for Pericles. The tune is a Russian church anthem.

*There are tunnels beneath Bryn Mawr College (now sealed off) and beneath Haverford College (still open, but Public Safety throws a fit), which were used for the maids to go from building to building without being seen by the students.

*There are dining four halls: Erdman, Rhoads, Haffner, and Brecon. Most of the workers are frosh, so be nice to them :o) There is one dining hall with good food: Haffner. (Of course, I just happen to work there)

*The dining room used to be in Denbigh Hall, where the language lab is now. It was here that the High Table was, where M. Carey Thomas used to dine. There is a group of students, nicknamed (creatively) the "M. Carey Thomas-ites" who eat brunch every Sunday in Erdman. They place linen tablecloths on the table, light their lanterns, wear bat robes, and have a giant portrait of M. Carey Thomas at one end of the table. (Incidentally, Thomas Great Hall is named for M. Carey Thomas)

*There are ghosts in Pembroke East, Pembroke West, and Merion, and witches in Denbigh Hall (and also supposedly a ghost).

*If fire reaches the roof of Denbigh Hall, the entire building will burn in 1 minute, 14 seconds. The reason for this is that Denbigh is so old, there is hay in the walls as insulation.

*If a fire starts in Rhoads Hall, the building will collapse in 30 seconds.

*Bryn Mawr students do not have to pay for their laundry. However, the washers and dryers constantly break as retribution.

*There is a May Pole dance at the College, and also a May Hole dance. See the Bryn Mawr Cult page for more information.

*Not everyone who goes to Bryn Mawr is a lesbian, nor do people who go to Bryn Mawr become lesbians. Of course, with 'Nova men being skeevy, Haverford men short and hairy (and EVIL!), and Swat men drunk and psycho, being lesbian is probably a better option than being heterosexual.

*Bryn Mawr is part of the "Tri-Co," that being the respective student bodies of Haverford, Swathmore, and Bryn Mawr. Bryn Mawr has a much closer relationship with Haverford (i.e. we can live at 'Ford, they can live here, we publish our courses in the same course guide, we can eat at either school, etc.). Haverford women regret this relationship -- I've been accused of trying to steal "their" men.

*Students are commonly referred to as "Mawrtyrs" or "Mawrters." Haverford students are " 'Fords," and Swarthmore students are "Swatties."

*Bryn Mawr students can take classes at Haverford, Swarthmore, or UPenn.
