There has been a lot of
bad press about Greek life on college campuses lately and I want to make
my own personal statement about how going greek is probably one of the
best things a person can do in college.
It does depend a lot on
the campus you're on, but Greek life is about developing as an adult with
the support of your fellow students. Greek organizations are responsible
for a majority of the philanthropy work done on college campuses (don't
believe me? Check out the Stevens D-Phi-E page about Castle
Point King ), intense scholastic support (Greek
organizations are required by their national organizations to maintain
academic standards exceeding their school average), encouragement of personal
development (most organizations have member development plans which outline
plans like becoming leaders on campus, attending educational sessions on
relevant social issues, and holding leadership positions within the organization),
and the most FUN you can find at college (and, no, that doesn't have to
have anything to do with beer!).
In response to the current
reports on hazing, New Members are required in most states to sign anti
hazing agreements, expecting them to not allow themselves to become victim
to any acts of hazing. Greek life is for personal development and
growth and if there is an organization that would risk the health and well-being
of it's members, than why would anyone want to be a part of it, and why
would any self-respecting college student allow it to continue past a first
instance?
I am the New Member Educator
for my organization, and I would be happy to answer any questions you might
have about Greek life or the concerns brought on by the media.

This soapbox is getting
kind of high for me, so let's go back to the Casa de Lyn!
