Simon Bolivar
 
Simon Bolivar was born on July 24, 1783 in Caracas, Venezuela. He was mostly educated by private tutors. He was influenced by
the French political philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau.
Simon fought in a revolt against Spain in Venezuela (1810) under the command of Francisco de Miranda. They were defeated by
Spain. He was forced to leave the country, but in 1812 came back to Venezuela, By 1813 had captured Caracas and became the
dictator, but again in 1814 the Spaniards defeated him. He hid from them in Jamaica and later Haiti.
Yet again in 1817 he united his forces with others and invaded Venezuela. After their win Bolivar was elected President. In 1819
Bolivar defeated the Spaniards in Boyaca, which is located across the Andes Mountains in present day Columbia. After this, the
republic of Columbia, Venezuela and New Granada (now Columbia), was formed, and Bolivar became President. Then he
defeated a lot more cities. He also helped Peru get its independence and was elected President of Peru in 1825. He also organized
a new republic in southern Peru and which was named Bolivia in his honor. In 1828 he resigned presidency of the republic of
Columbia because he could not maintain political unity. Simon Bolivar died on December 17, 1830.
He is called the Liberator. He would always be remembered as the South American soldier and statesman, who was the most
significant leader in the struggle for South American independence from Spain. Today he is remembered throughout South
America, and in Venezuela and Bolivia his birthday is a national holiday.
