King Louis XVI's Execution

After so much troubles with other countries, the National Convention, a newly set up group of delegates, voted to make a republic. At the same time, the Jacobins insisted that Louis be tried for treason.A box of secret papers was found at the king's former residence. The documents served as enough evidence to convict the king of treason.

A mob of about 20,000 citizens rushed to Tuileries to capture the king. They killed over 500 guards and imprisoned the king in a building called the Temple. On January 21,1973, King Louis XVI was sent to the guillotine. He was buried in a plain coffin in a commoner's  graveyard.
In 1793, other countires were joining in on the attack against France. The
British, Dutch, and Spainish joined Austria in the fight. France was doing
very poorly, and many people suffered from economic hardships and
starvation. To help France, the National Convention created a Committee
of Public Safety, which was a campaign against the enemies of France.
This campaign was called the Reign of Terror.
