In my opinion, Eric’s acting-out in class is a direct result of the
trauma he has just experienced in losing his mother. Although
it is said that he has problems with written language, there is
no distinct discrepancy listed between his performance and his
ability established through diagnostic testing. He does meet
federal guidelines as being behavior disordered, but I don’t feel
that Special Education is the place to deal with this type of
The school is providing counseling, which I feel is a positive
step on their part. I’m not sure I agree witht he “peer”
counseling though. I fear that Eric’s problems might influence
the other student too greatly. It is best to offer counseling from
someone qualified to deal with his problems.
The weekly psychological counseling outside the school is also
another positive approach to dealing with Eric’s problems. This
will allow Eric to deal with his negative thoughts and behavior
