The Surrounded A

The surronded A is so known by the public and accepted by the anarhists as a traditionell anarchy symbol, as many thinks that it is a very old symbol. But in fact it's a pretty new symbol. The symbol was introduced in April 1964 in an internal paper for Jennesses Libertaires (liberty youth) in France. The surronded A was a grapical anarchsymbol. They wanted to have it as a simple signature which they could undersign catchwords with, and who was enough commonly to be used off all kinds off anarchists. The idea to take the letter A with a ring surround comes propably from the antimilitarian symbol, the peace symbol, "the fork" was replaced with an A, the first letter in the word Anarchy in all European languages. Jennesses Libertaires wrote: "The symbol we suggest will in the end, if it will be used in connection with anarchy propaganda all the time, be associated directly with the idea anarchy." But it didn't make any bigger success. 1966 the Sacco Vanzettigroup used the symbol again. Between 1966 and 1968 the A was used only in Milano. But during the revolt in Paris 1968 the A was shown up again were it was born, and then all over the word, on walls, on posters, flags and so on. And got that status it have today, known as the symbol of anarchy.
