Mark Graham

Clan: Malkavian
Effective Generation: 12th
Apparent Age: 20
Haven: None Yet
Concept: Quantum Physicist

Physical Description:
Mark is tall (6'3") and very thin. He has untidy dark brown hair in overgrown spikes, and piercing green eyes. His features are angular but slightly effeminate. Although he is moderately handsome, this is offset by his ominous aspect and habitual frown. He usually wears black jeans, well-worn boots, a dark t-shirt and a leather jacket with a knife hidden in it, and affects thin glasses as well. He has a nervous tic, and often reaches for a cigarette when in stressful situations. He speaks with a slight London accent, and gets touchy and defensive if anyone makes fun of him for it. Mark appears to be around 20 years old.

Personality:
Although he seems outwardly very normal compared to most Malkavians, Mark is as tormented and confused as any of his clanmates. He generally acts in a polite, shy manner with occasional but terrifying bouts of rage when he is unable to keep up the facade any more. Despite his high humanity Mark becomes nihilistic, depressed and short-tempered often. He has so far managed to suppress his dark personality by directing his rage towards 'servants of the machine' and himself rather than taking it out on innocents, so perversely when in a bad mood he becomes strongly motivated to right wrongs.

However he is painfully aware that one immoral act could launch him into a rapid downward spiral, even more so than with most vampires. After his brief, frantic anger he tends to become guilty, depressed and suicidal, and often acts in a deliberately imprudent way. He will apply physics to anything, and in fact performs Eyes of Chaos by making some extremely complicated equations in his head (so complicated no-one but him understands them, in fact). Because of his preoccupation with finding a meaning and purpose to life, he often spends hours writing increasingly complex equations in an effort to find a 'theory of everything'.

He enjoys playing guitar as a 'side project', but in fact earns all of his money through playing gigs or as a session musician. His taste in music runs towards political punk or post-punk (Gang of Four, the Clash, the Dead Kennedy's), although he can 'appreciate' almost anything with his equations and often find surprising meanings... The music he writes himself is deeply introspective and mostly an odd sort of prog-punk rock with occasional thrashy outbursts, technically very competent but somehow difficult to get into.

Background:
Mark grew up in a working class family on the outskirts of London. He was a bright child, and easily earned a scholarship at a private high school. His shy personality, relative poverty and fragile appearance ensured that he was bullied heavily for years, and his father died of cancer when he was 14. This lead to a nervous breakdown, which fundamentally changed him; after the breakdown he became very edgy and was soon left alone by the bullies after he showed his vicious streak. In his mid-teens he was haunted by depression and constant feelings of detachment, heightened by his social isolation. In this time he developed a bleak and nihilistic worldview, which never fully left him. He drifted through school, managing good grades with barely any effort, until he read a book on quantum physics and chaos theory.

To Mark, it seemed that the meaning of life lay buried under all this other knowledge, that science could provide a final solution to his despair. This conviction enabled him to develop a more positive attitude and harness his anger towards improving the state of the world around him, through activism and hard work. He entered Cambridge University and continued to study until his final year, when strange visions and ideas began to surface in his head. The psychologists he was made to see concluded he was suffering from borderline-schizophrenic delusions and advised that he should take a year out of the course and stay away from science, but Mark ignored them.

This was when his oracular abilities began to emerge, and he was noticed by one of the Malkavians who frequented the university area. He embraced Mark and deserted him immediately. After his embrace he lived a fairly dull unlife, mostly keeping to himself, until his occasional pranks became too ambitious and a prominent Ventrue was offended by Mark's sabotage of his computer with a simple virus causing error messages calculated to induce paranoia. He had to leave London under a black cloud to avoid the outraged Ancilla's wrath. He left for New York, where he fought against the Sabbat briefly before the rest of his coterie was defeated by a war pack. He fled the battle, and left New York immediately afterwards. It is a constant source of guilt to him that he deserted his coterie, and he is quite sure they were all killed. Since then he wandered across the USA, eventually being staked by Kurt and brought to New Orleans.
