Background:
Up to the age of 13, Johann Sandgren lived with his mother, who was an unmarried factory worker and alcoholic from the Stockholm suburbs. Without a father, Johann had problems with school and other kids from the very
beginning. In his teens, these problems peaked as he was arrested for shoplifting for the first time at the age of
14. His mother lost custody of him and Johann was assigned to a foster home. He stayed there two years until he
escaped, took a hiring on a ship under the Polish flag and went to sea. For 3 years he sailed all of the seven seas on earth before he decided to take up residence in the States.
Without a proper education (and a Green Card), life was hard for the young man. He drifted from place to place in the US and Canada doing whatever jobs were available. During that time he was a postman, warehouse worker, car mechanic, and even a truck
driver (without a proper CDL license) in Canada driving logging trucks. Luckily, he was gifted with tools and devices, and having a special knack for crafts he was able to take on a wide range of temporary jobs without getting too involved in illegal activities. Never quite social, and enjoying being alone he never made many friends. He was known as "that shy, nice fellow, what's his name? John?" who did what was asked for, if he got reasonable payment for it, and never made a big deal out of anything, least of all himself.
It was around the spring of 1984 he first met a guy called Kurt Landson. John was working in one small packet delivery company's warehouse in Oklahoma at the time, doing night-shift every off week. Kurt came often to pick up packages, always at night. While John suspected Kurt was involved in illegal activities, they became "friends", if the term could be used loosely.
John thought Kurt was nothing more than a petty criminal who sold stolen car parts or like, until he Embraced John. The Embrace was a horrible experience for John. When he woke to his unlife, Kurt had dragged him and his night-shift co-worker called Martin to an empty warehouse. In Hunger, John attacked the still unconscious Martin with a roar and bit his throat wide open. It was his first feeding, but (so far) the last that has lead to a mortal's death.
John was terrified of what he had become, and Kurt was a rough and hard Sire. What little guidance he gave to John was always accompanied with mockery, if not direct violence. Kurt has bad relations with most of the Kindred, even those of his own clan for reasons John doesn't know. As Kurt's Childe this meant hard times for John as well, and therefore he tries to keep some distance to his notorious Sire. Indeed their relationship has grown more remote lately, but John believes this is only temporary due to Kurt's interests being elsewhere for now. |
