Activities that teach communication, conflict resolution, appreciating diversity and building community may be what our world needs now more than anything.
We need your help! Your support of the Annual Oasis Bowl A Thon is imperative. Your pledge to participate in the Bowl- A- Thon on March 8th & 9th, 2003 will help make it possible for 93% of Oasis alumni to graduate from high school, this year.
With the river as its guide, the Oasis Program has evolved and grown over the last sixteen years. Oasis is a drop out prevention program for eighth graders in Pinellas County. Oasis looks for students who are struggling in the traditional academic Pinellas County schools, but demonstrate potential.
With a focus on hands-on learning and environmental studies, Oasis students practice problem solving, become aware of themselves as a part of the natural systems and build self-esteem and confidence as they learn. Working in groups, Oasis students build character and interpersonal skills.
Out in the wilderness, the roles are reversed, as students lead their parents and the staff on expeditions including canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, and camping. Parents and children are free from the distractions of every day life and are able to focus on their communication and problem solving skills as a team.
Through individualized attention, counseling, and parent support groups, students and their parents become aware of their self-defeating inner-dialogues and the choices they are making in their lives. With a focus on positive self-talk and decision making, students and their families can focus their energy on achieving powerful, personal goals.
Last year, our financial goal was not met by $ 8,000. Our students need you to champion for our program by personally participating, personally donating and personally asking others to get involved in our Bowl A Thon.
