Dwarves

dwarf.jpg (10591 bytes) Dwarves have always been strange little men that pop of in fairy tales. They always are shown to be a short, but strong folk. They seem to have a great liking for mining things from the earth. Other than that folk tales don't really say where they come from. They always seem to appear to help others but that is about all. More modern writers have began to flesh the dwarven race out a bit. The first such author to do this was Tolkien. Tolkien went as far as to tell how the dwarves came to be...

They were made by Aulė, the smith and craft master of the Valar(a race of sub Gods). This was against Eru's(The first God's) Plan: Aulė had neither the authority nor indeed the power to create other souls (the result of his efforts

was a group of what amounted to puppets). However, because he repented his folly at once and because his motives had been good (he desired children to teach, not slaves to command) Eru gave the Dwarves life and made them part of the Plan. The Elves were still to be the "Firstborn", though, so the Dwarves had to sleep until after the Elves awoke.

The basic desription of Dwarves is that they are a short, stocky people of great strength and endurance. They almost always have beards and like to dwell in the earth. They like to mine and to work the metals of the earth.
