The Hippocampus

hippocam.jpg (7472 bytes) The hippocampus is a creature that is half-horse and half-fish, with the tail of either a horse or a serpent. It may or may not have forelegs with webbed paws, and may have a fin on the back of it's neck. It is also the mount of Neptune (One of the greek Gods of the sea). The Greeks called the sea horse "hippocampus."

Modern fantasy has changed the roll of the Hippocampus a bit. In some roleplaying games and stories the Hippocampus is the steed to the merfolk instead of to a God. They have been changed into oceanic horses that can be tamed, just as regular horses on the land
