The Roc

The Roc was a giant bird of prey with a wing span large enough to block
out the sun. This creature originally comes from Presian legends. There is one incident with the Roc that comes from the stories of the Voyages of Sinbad the Sailer. Once he was a merchant who decided to go on a sea voyage to turn a profit. The ship anchored in a sheltered harbor of a small unknown island. The crew, including Sinbad, all went ashore to get supplies. The crew found some large Roc eggs and made a meal of them, all except Sinbad who knew that eggs such as those would have parents. He warned the others but they paid him no heed. All was fine, or so it seemed, and they went back on board the ship. It wasn't too long before the angry parent Rocs found out what happened to their eggs. They flew down like a storm and destroyed the merchant ship. Sinbad survived by grabbing onto a plank from the wreck and hanging on. The rest of the crew drowned. Sinbad was later washed onto another island where he was finally able to secure work on another ship in which to carry him home. Thus was the vengence of the Rocs. |
