J.R.R. Tolkien used trolls in his fantasy works. In his first book "The Hobbit" there was a part where the adventuring party was captured by trolls. Gandalf the wizard kept the stupid creatures arguing with each other all night. They did not notice how much time had passed until the sun came up. The startled Trolls were turned to stone in the sunlight.
