The Witch

witch.gif (1876 bytes) Witches are thought to be ugly old hags that use their magic and spells for evil purposes. Often a cat or some other animal will be associated with them as a familiar. In the Middle Ages the fear of the witch came to it's height. The people blamed the black plague on them. They claimed that witches were the brides to the devil and would do sickening rituals in that worship. Many cats were also killed because of the connection they had to witches. People became irrational due to fear and superstition.
At the end of the Middle Ages came the times of the Inquisition. Church officials would hunt for anyone or anything that they thought had something to do with the devil. Many innocent wise woman and healers were burned at the stake because the fearful towns folk would claim they were witches. These irrational killings (though more in the form of hangings, etc.) even stetched to colonial times. Such a thing happened in Salem were many more innnocent people were killed.

These days there has been a rise in the number of people that practice Witch craft. They are by no means worshippers of the devil. Their magic and rituals are meant only for good and healing. Modern Witches belong to the officially recognized religion of Wicca.
