Daily Sketchbook Assignment

Student grades are not based in a comparitive manner, allowing students more freedom to grow individually.  However, students are expected to demonstrate growth through the visual arts program at F.N. Postlethwait.  The best approach for continued growth is regular practice of skills, an accepted practice in sports and music.   To this end, students are required to complete a sketch book (Monday through Friday; including inservice days and holidays).  Students may elect to complete an assignment in advance of a known scheduling conflict.  The exact starting and finishing dates for sketchbooks will be announced in class and posted on the school voice mail system (698-8410 ext.138).

All sketches should include the following:

1.  drawing of an object
The subject matter of the sketch is purely the students' choice, although it should be appropriate for the school setting and should be something the students can directly view.  In addition, students have the option to choose their own style.  It is expected that students spend at least 5 to 10 minutes working on each daily sketch.  It is also probable that multiple drawings of an object be completed in order to better reconstruct the object.

2.  self critique
Students should examine their sketches for two distinct points.  This may require from two sentences up to ten sentences.  They should look for areas that worked well and those areas in which they could improve.

3.  date & signature
Students should develop a set signature and include the date of the piece.

Mr. Statham will check sketch books on a weekly basis for completion; however some delays may occur due to classroom involvement with various projects.  Sketch books will be checked for completeness and assigned up to 2 points per day.  Those sketches missing some information will be given 1 point.  Students missing sketches will receive 0 points until the work is completed. (Late work will not be deducted from sketch book assignments as long as the work matches/ exceeds the quality displayed in class.
