Gigabit Gets Ready For Business

Is it to early for corporate to consider purchasing gigabit Ethernet switches? Not according to this article. It states, "devices are mature enough to clear up bottlenecks in LAN backbone and server farms. The main features are the backbone speed, packet throughput, and port density. Backbone speeds in the modest devices range from 15 Gbps and throughputs of 7Mpps or faster. High end performers, backbone speeds in excess of 500 Gbps and throughputs up to 400 Mpps. Port density speeds vary. Prices for a gigabit Ethernet have been steadily declining, last fall prices averaged $1,899.

It is always amazing when new technology becomes available that as a manager you have to decide if it is worth it to the company to purchase new equipment and/or systems. That when adding to an existing system that the new system is compatible and can support the old system. Do you purchase when it is first released or wait one to two years as the prices decrease and any bugs are worked out?

This article there is no agreeing or disagreeing. If it is a product that is needed by a company and meets their requirements and supports exiting equipment then it sounds good.

If I am not mistaken I believe it was mentioned in class that the University of Central of Oklahoma (UCO) uses Ethernet.
