Respriatory System lung.gif (17718 bytes)

The Respiratory System is the system in the body that deals with breathing. In this system the body takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide which is not needed.

The first step in breathing is that the body takes in air through the mouth and the nose, then brings it down throw the trachea (windpipe). The trachea is a pipe that is shaded by rings of cartilage. The pipe divides in two tubes called the bronchi. The bronchi  leads air into the lung. Inside the lung the bronchi divides into smaller and smaller tubes called bronchiolies. At the end of each smaller tube there are small air balloons called alveoli.

Small blood vessels called capillaries rap around the alveolies. the capillaries have thiny walls that let air, oxygen and cardon dioxide seep through into the bloodstream and into the alveolies. Then it is removed from the body when we breath.

The diaphragms the muscle that controls breathing. When the diaphragm flattens it expands the chestand air is sucked into the lung. When the diaphragm relaxes the chest collapses and the air is released out from the lung.

Facts
* The right lung is slightly larger than the left lung.

*Hairs in the nose helps to clean the air we breathe as well as warming it.

*The surface area of the lungs is roughly the same size as a tennis court.

* The capillaries in the lungs would extend 1,600 km if placed end to end.

* A person at rest usally breathes between 12 to 15 times a minute.

* The breathing rate is faster in children and women then in men.
