Afrikaans Department

Afrikaans is one of the eleven official languages of South Africa. It is mainly derived from Dutch but many languages that it came in contact with, influenced it in some ways.

Afrikaans is widely spoken in the Western Cape and therefore it is offered as a second language at Pinelands High. A group of learners in Grades 10 and 11 are also taking it as a first language, along with English.

Our department consists of eight members. The members are:

Ms Betsy Arendse
Ms. Lucille Cassie
Ms. Carin Geldenhuys
Mr. Quinten Leonard
Mr. Thys Lourens
Ms. Lucinda van Rooyen (subject head)
Ms Suret Stassen
Mr. Rubin van Wyk

Our aim is to teach the learners to understand and converse in Afrikaans. We also expose them to Afrikaans literature in the form of stories, novels and poetry. In so doing they will get to know and understand the Afrikaans culture and language.

Because Pinelands is in an area where English is the dominant language, some learners find it difficult to learn Afrikaans because they never hear or speak it. For some of our learners it is even their third language. Because of this we do offer remedial work and in class we concentrate on oral work.

We strive to be a world-class school, rooted in Africa, that facilitates a quality, all-round education in a caring and disciplined environment.
