Art is seen as one of the drawcards of Pinelands High School and is thus of a very high standard. Pinelands High School is unique in that it offers three art subjects - Painting, Textile Design and Ceramics in Grades 10, 11, 12 and General Art in Grades 8 and 9. The basis for all art subjects is drawing and students are encouraged to draw directly from life, where possible. All three art studios are fully equipped and the students have ample room to work in. It is compulsory that all HG art students study History of Art. This is presented to the students in specific modules and the students are taught and exposed to a wide range of art works, both international and local. The students are encouraged to develop personal interpretation and opinion on various artworks and are required to submit a research essay at the end of every module.
General ArtAt Grade 8 level the learners choose Art as a choice subject for a six-week period, after which they can decide to continue with Art until the end of Grade 9. During these two years the learners are exposed to Painting, Printmaking and Ceramic techniques as well as the study of History of Art. Thus learners will be able to make an educated decision when choosing subjects for Grade 10-12.
PaintingPainting is offered at Pinelands High School from Grade 10-12. Learners who take this subject are encouraged to develop sound drawing skills and techniques and to develop an understanding of colour theory. At senior level learners are given more conceptual projects and are encouraged to develop their own personal style and interpretation of the subject. Learners are also encouraged to experiment with three-dimensional forms and mixed media and to reflect an awareness and understanding of the contemporary art world in their work.
Textile Design and TechnologyTextiles is only offered to senior students. The students are encouraged to develop sound drawing skills and explore the technical processes of design and silkscreen printing. The learners have access to two connected studios; one for designing and drawing and art history, and one for printing; as well as a darkroon for the photographic processes. This subject is geared towards the industry and requires extensive research into textiles, fashion and interior design. The learner will have a sound knowledge and skill when they leave Grade 12. Conceptual thinking, brainstorming, high quality of work and professional conduct as a designer, are just a few of the qualities of this course.
CeramicsCeramics is offered at Pinelands High School from Grade 10-12. The department is well equipped with two electric kilns, a Raku kiln as well as a sawdust pit. We have two electric wheels but the focus is more on hand built vessels. Learners are encouraged to market and sell their work at the end of their school career. When a Grade 12 learner leaves school they would have gained the knowledge to start and run a studio. |
